NEW YORK (AP) - An appeals court in New York says federal law protects Facebook from a lawsuit trying to blame it for terrorist attacks carried out by those who communicated on its platform.
The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan ruled Wednesday.
It upheld a Brooklyn federal judge’s finding that the Communications Decency Act of 1996 protects Facebook from U.S. citizen victims and others who sued over terrorist attacks committed by Hamas in Israel between 2014 and 2016. The lawsuit claimed Facebook provided material support to Hamas by letting members use its service.
The lawsuit claimed that Hamas used Facebook to post content encouraging terrorist attacks in Israel during the time period of the attacks.
Facebook maintained it aggressively combats extremist content on its platform, removing terrorist-related content.
