LEXINGTON, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina Department of Education has been granted $8 million to buy new school buses thanks to a settlement involving Volkswagen.
News outlets report state leaders including Gov. Henry McMaster made the announcement Tuesday in Lexington. The money will be used to buy 78 school buses that run on propane.
The Post and Courier reports South Carolina has been criticized as having one of the worst school bus fleets in the country. State lawmakers set aside $19 million from lottery profits this year for school buses.
Charleston’s transit system received money for two electric buses and charging stations. Anderson received money for a bus fueled by compressed natural gas.
South Carolina will receive nearly $34 million from the 2016 emissions settlement the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reached with Volkswagen.
