PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The federal agency that oversees workplace civil rights has sued a Rhode Island-based bank it alleges violated the law by refusing to re-assign a longtime employee who became disabled.
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission says in the lawsuit filed Wednesday that Citizens Bank refused to provide a reasonable accommodation to a supervisor in the company’s Cranston call center after he developed anxiety and requested reassignment to a position that didn’t require him to field customer calls.
The suit says Citizens refused to reassign the employee despite the availability of multiple vacant positions he was qualified to fill.
The worker, whose condition required a medical leave, eventually resigned.
The agency says Citizens violated the Americans with Disabilities Act.
A Citizens spokesman says the company does not comment on pending litigation.
