Running back Ezekiel Elliott has not reported on time for Dallas Cowboys training camp in Oxnard, California, presumably holding out for a new contract before the 2019 season.
Team owner Jerry Jones told reporters Friday that Elliott was “late” for the start of camp.
“This does not in any way diminish my excitement for this team,” Jones told reporters.
NFL Network reported early in the week that Elliott hadn’t made up his mind about whether to show for camp on time. But Thursday night, the buzz grew when beat reporters learned Elliott was not aboard the team charter from Dallas to California.
Elliott is entering the fourth year of his rookie contract. Other holdouts around the NFL include Saints receiver Michael Thomas, Chargers running back Melvin Gordon and Redskins tackle Trent Williams.
Elliott has gotten into legal trouble more than once in his young NFL career, most recently an incident at a music festival this offseason where he reportedly shoved a security guard and was briefly detained, but not arrested. Elliott met with Commissioner Roger Goodell in early July to discuss the altercation, and Goodell determined it did not warrant a suspension for Elliott.
