BOZEMAN, Mont. (AP) - The Environmental Protection Agency says the soil at a federal Superfund site in Montana is clean and ready for redevelopment.

The Bozeman Daily Chronicle reported Tuesday that the federal agency has proposed removing part of the former wood-treating operation in Bozeman from the list of contaminated sites.

The Idaho Pole Company site was listed in 1986. Chemicals used to preserve wood had leaked from vats, causing soil and groundwater contamination.

The agency says it and the state Department of Environmental Quality believe no more work is needed on the soil to protect health and the environment.

Agency project manager Roger Hoogerheide says the cleanup of the groundwater portion is still ongoing.

The agency’s announcement last week launched a 30-day public comment period on the proposed delisting.
