NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The Louisiana state Supreme Court has upheld the conviction and death sentence of a Louisiana inmate who killed a guard during a 1999 escape attempt.

Jeffrey Clark was convicted in 2011 in the beating and stabbing death of Capt. David Knapps.

The state court had upheld the conviction before. But the U.S. Supreme Court wanted Clark’s case reviewed again in light of its earlier decision in an unrelated case. In that case, the federal court had thrown out the conviction of a man who had disagreed with his attorney’s decision to concede guilt.

The state Supreme Court said in its ruling dated Friday that a second review of Clark’s case found no sign that Clark and his lawyer disagreed over their “fundamental objective” in their case.
