MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont Gov. Phil Scott says $3 million in education funding appropriated by the Legislature this year is designed to help reverse the state’s workforce challenge of an aging population and a shrinking number of workers.
Scott, a Republican, made the comments Wednesday during a news conference in Montpelier.
The 2020 Vermont budget received $2.5 million increase to help make an education in the Vermont State College system more affordable.
The budget also included a one-time increase of $500,000 for non-degree grants to help nearly 300 Vermonters access higher education programs that don’t necessarily result in a two- or four-year degree.
Scott says the state colleges system provides education and training, but the schools also offer an opportunity to recruit and retain Vermonters who can help reverse the state’s population trends.
