HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont says he’s nominating Meriden Assistant Superintendent of Schools Miguel Cardona to become the next State Department of Education commissioner.
The Democrat made the announcement Thursday after the State Board of Education voted to recommend Cardona for the job. Cardona’s nomination now requires legislative confirmation.
Lamont denied he may have embarrassed Bloomfield Superintendent of Schools James Thompson. He was offered the job in a July 8 letter, only to have the administration change course. Lamont says the offer was contingent on “reaching all the other agreements you need,” including a salary deal.
The letter, first reported by Fox61 , noted Thompson’s salary would be $192,500.
Cardona has held his current job since 2015, where he’s responsible for overseeing instruction, leadership development and curriculum for the district’s 9,000 students.
