JAMESTOWN, Ind. (AP) - Police say a 5-year-old girl died and a 3-year-old girl is in critical condition after they fell into a central Indiana pond.

The Boone County Sheriff’s office says Arianna Aliff of New Ross died Wednesday after being pulled from the pond near Jamestown, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) northwest of Indianapolis.

A 3-year-old girl who’s under foster care by Aliff’s parents was hospitalized in critical condition. The sheriff’s office had no updates Thursday on her condition.

Major Brian Stevenson says the girls fell into a pond that’s part of a residential property while they and other family members were playing outside Wednesday. Relatives found the girls in the pond after searching for the youngsters.

Police said the Aliff family has four biological children, two adopted children and two foster children.
