SAN DIEGO (AP) - A man who shot at San Diego police and choked a police dog has been sentenced to 33 years and eight months in prison.
The San Diego Union-Tribune says 36-year-old Hayden Gerson expressed remorse at his sentencing Tuesday.
Police went to Gerson’s Clairemont-area home in 2016 after his ex-girlfriend called 911. Prosecutors said Gerson was “prepared for war with police” and had stockpiled some 600 rounds of ammunition.
Gerson choked and punched arriving officers and shot at police snipers as officers surrounded the house. He surrendered after an eight-hour standoff.
Gerson was convicted of attempted voluntary manslaughter and other charges.
The defense said Gerson didn’t know what he was doing because he has bipolar disorder and was on drugs at the time.
