BALTIMORE | Nationals manager Dave Martinez announced Tuesday that Erick Fedde will be called up from the Double-A Harrisburg Senators to start on Wednesday against the Baltimore Orioles.
Fedde is 1-1 with a 3.79 ERA in 11 games this year — six starts and five relief appearances — for the Nationals. He last pitched in the minor leagues on July 2 with Triple-A Fresno, then threw a simulated game on Sunday in Harrisburg of about 20 to 25 pitches.
“He has been looking good. I think he will help us in the big leagues here pretty soon,” Harrisburg All-Star catcher Tres Barrera told The Washington Times on Monday.
Stephen Strasburg (11-4, 3.46) will be pushed back a day and start Thursday in Atlanta against the first-place Braves.
“Giving Stephen an extra day kind of helps. It doesn’t bother him,” Martinez said.
Washington (49-43) was 7½ games back of the Braves before Tuesday’s game against the Orioles.
Also on Tuesday, ace pitcher Max Scherzer threw from about 75 feet in warmups at Camden Yards.
Scherzer (9-5, 2.30) went on the 10-day injured list last Saturday, retroactive to July 10, with a mid-back strain. The earliest he is eligible to pitch is Saturday in Atlanta.
“We need him for the long haul,” Martinez said. “Let’s take it day by day.”
