NEWARK, Del. (AP) - Authorities in Delaware have arrested a police recruit who is accused of beating, choking and head-butting his girlfriend until she fell unconscious.

The News Journal of Wilmington reports Taylor Reynolds surrendered to Newark police late last week on charges of second-degree assault and strangulation. He was set to graduate Thursday from the New Castle County Police academy, but instead was placed on unpaid leave as the department investigates the allegations.

Court documents say Reynold’s girlfriend told authorities a July 7 argument between the two escalated to violence, with Reynolds attacking her as she screamed for help. She told officers she escaped after he fell asleep.

Reynolds played football in high school and for James Madison University. The Atlanta Falcons later signed and released him as undrafted free agent.
