Phil Mickelson wants to get his “best” back. His efforts included a break from social media — and a break from eating.
The five-time major champion took to Twitter Sunday to tell his followers why he had not been active on social media in recent weeks.
In a video he posted from a golf course in Ireland, Mickelson mentioned that he fasted for six days, consuming nothing but water and “a special coffee blend,” and lost 15 pounds as part of a “hard reset.”
“I haven’t posted anything because I haven’t felt good about myself and the way I’ve been playing, and so I haven’t done anything or wanted to be in public,” Mickelson said.

Mickelson joined Twitter last August and his account quickly became a hit with fans, often for posting funny or goofy videos and messages that his fans saw as quintessentially him. Fans responded to his video Sunday praising his honesty about his mental and physical health.
The 49-year-old known as “Lefty” has not had a terrific season. He’s missed seven cuts, and since winning at Pebble Beach last February, he’s only finished inside the top 20 at one event.
Mickelson will compete in the Open Championship, beginning Thursday at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland.
