PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - U.S. Rep. Jim Langevin wants to establish a task force to stop the foreign fentanyl and other opioids into the United States.
The Rhode Island Democrat is a senior member of the House Committee on Homeland Security.
Langevin and U.S. Reps. Peter King, a New York Republican, Max Rose, a New York Democrat, and Mike McCaul, a Texas Republican, introduced the Joint Task Force to Combat Opioid Trafficking Act last week.
It would establish a joint task force at the Department of Homeland Security.
Langevin says a multi-pronged approach is needed to solve this ongoing public health crisis, and it must include increased efforts to keep fentanyl and other opioids out of the country.
According to Langevin’s office, most illicit fentanyl is produced in China before being smuggled into the United States.
