BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The installation of a chain-link fence around a Vermont park indicates the beginning of a rehabilitation project set to be completed by fall 2020.

The Burlington Free Press reports the $4.5 million project at City Hall Park was approved by Burlington’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Waterfront in March after years of planning.

The closure of the park took place without much advanced notice, and two days after receiving opposition in Vermont Superior Court. The dispute’s over how many trees will be removed and replaced.

City officials say the renovations will create a better meeting space for the community.

WPTZ-TV reports the renovation plans to resolve issues with infrastructure stemming from soil compaction, stormwater runoff and outdates equipment in the park’s fountains.

The renovations are expected to temporarily affect parking availability.
