PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Providence City Council has agreed on a $770 million budget plan after weeks of tense negotiations with the mayor’s administration.
Mayor Jorge Elorza signed the budget Tuesday night, which was cut by about $3 million by members of the council’s finance committee.
Council President Sabina Matos says councilors planned to work with elected officials on the budget to pursue a progressive tax structure.
The Providence Journal reports the budget includes a tax rate of $24.56 per $1,000 of valuation for homeowners and a 40% homestead exemption for those who live in their homes.
The budget level-funds nearly all city departments and programs as well as upholds pay raises and removes all non-obligated, unfilled positions.
