PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The National Labor Relations Board is intervening in a dispute between a Rhode Island casino and a union seeking a list of reported crimes at the facility.
Twin River Casino has until next Monday to answer a complaint issued by the board, after the union representing casino employees filed an unfair labor practice charge.
Twin River spokeswoman Patti Doyle said Wednesday they’re not surprised by the timing of this accusation because they’re in the midst of union negotiations. They’ll cooperate with the labor board, she added.
Service Employees International Union Local 334 asked in March for a list of reported break-ins, assaults, burglaries and other crimes at the Lincoln casino, including the nature and specific location of each incident.
Union lawyer Marc Gursky said he filed the unfair labor practice charge because Twin River responded with a list of crimes involving employees, not all crimes. It shows about 30 incidents, such as reports of employees’ cars being vandalized and employees being threatened by casino patrons.
Union President Joe Marciano said there have been dozens of incidents over the past three years and it’s time for Twin River to take employee and guest safety seriously.
The union wants the casino to provide parking lot shuttles for employees so they don’t have to walk out to their cars late at night, or take other steps.
The labor board set a hearing for October in Boston, if the issue isn’t resolved by then.
