PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence officials say they will no longer provide police details at local strip clubs.
Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare said Tuesday it is not in the city’s best interest to provide the service.
The move comes after state regulators allowed the Foxy Lady to reopen after three dancers were charged with prostitution. The state Department of Business Regulation has mandated the club to have a police detail every Friday and Saturday night.
The city’s police union has opposed Pare’s move, which they say will encourage clubs to hire private security.
Police union president Michael Imondi said Monday private security will not deter criminal activity and are more likely to not report things.
Foxy Lady manager Richard Angell says Pare’s decision is unfair to all the clubs in the city.
