Washington Times columnist Thom Loverro was named Tuesday as the 46th winner of the Nat Fleischer Award for excellence in boxing journalism by the Boxing Writers Association of America.
Loverro, who has been with The Times since 1992, has written extensively about boxing, including covering the two fights between Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield, Oscar De La Hoya’s controversial loss to Felix Trinidad and the megafight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.
“The best part of winning this award is the company I am in with some great boxing writers,” Loverro said.
“Boxing is where the best stories are, and it is an honor to be recognized for telling those stories.”
The Nat Fleischer Award, given for lifetime achievement, is the latest honor in a long and distinguished career for Loverro, who was named Maryland Sportswriter of the Year in 2009 and D.C. Sportswriter of the Year in 2014 — the same year he was cited by the Associated Press Sports Editors Association for his use of the Freedom of Information Act to report that the FBI believed the first Sonny Liston-Cassius Clay fight was fixed.
