PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Congressman Jim Langevin says it’s “past time” to reopen national parks, restore small business loans and pay the federal law enforcement officers who are working without compensation.
On their first day in the majority, House Democrats passed a plan Thursday night to re-open the government without funding President Donald Trump’s promised border wall.
The impasse over paying for a wall at the U.S.-Mexico border extended the shutdown into a 14th day.
Langevin, a Rhode Island Democrat, was Speaker pro tempore for Thursday, the opening of the 116th Congress. He managed debate as the chamber voted to end the government shutdown.
Langevin says Trump can’t continue “holding hundreds of thousands of federal workers and contractors hostage over an ineffective border wall.”
Trump said Thursday the wall is essential to border security.
