PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Congressman Jim Langevin (LAN’-jih-vin) will preside over the U.S. House of Representatives on the first day.
The Rhode Island Democrat was chosen as Speaker pro tempore for Thursday, the opening of the 116th Congress. He’ll manage debate as Democrats take majority control of the House and the chamber prepares to vote to end the government shutdown.
He says he’s honored to take the gavel. He feels it shows his party’s commitment to creating a more inclusive government that works for everyone.
Langevin became the first quadriplegic to act as Speaker pro tempore in 2010. He presided over the House as it marked the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Langevin was elected in November to serve a 10th term representing the 2nd Congressional District in western Rhode Island.
