STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. (AP) - Hundreds of people turned out on a rainy evening for the visitation for a Georgia police officer who died several weeks after he was shot during a confrontation with a suspect in a dentist’s office.

News outlets reported a line of people ran through the Cannon Cleveland Funeral Home in Stockbridge on Wednesday to honor Henry County officer Michael Smith.

Smith was shot Dec. 6 when he responded to a report of an upset man at a dentist’s office in the McDonough area.

Investigators said Smith went into the office and struggled with 53-year-old Dimaggio McNelly. Smith tried to stun the man, but a scuffle developed over the officer’s gun. A single shot was fired that killed McNelly and fatally injured Smith, who died Dec. 28.

The funeral is Thursday.
