MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - A water main break in Montpelier prompted the closure of a school and a building housing 650 state workers.

WCAX-TV reports that crews started working early Tuesday morning to stop the leak.

Route 12 was shut down and U-32 High School and the National Life building housing state workers were closed.

Hundreds of homes did not have water. The city was under a boil water notice.

Public Works Director Tom McArdle said an aging pipe could be a factor.
