SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s choice for assistant adjutant general for the Illinois Air National Guard has been promoted to brigadier general.

The Democratic governor looked on as Peter Nezamis (nih-ZA’-miss) was sworn in Monday at Camp Lincoln. The state’s adjutant general, Major Gen. Richard Hayes Jr., administered the oath.

The 55-year-old Nezamis joined the Michigan Air National Guard in 1986. He intended to be a part-time airman but was soon offered a full-time post which he never relinquished.

Nezamis has served several overseas deployments, including Desert Storm, the Balkans, and the Iraqi War.

The Belleville resident oversees about 3,000 Illinois Air National Guard members at Scott Air Force Base, Peoria and Springfield.

Major Gen. Michael Zerbonia is assistant adjutant general for the Army National Guard.
