HONOLULU (AP) - Honolulu police say an officer shot and killed a man that sped toward him in a pickup truck.

Three officers tried to stop a pickup truck seen weaving in and out of traffic lanes in Kalihi early Tuesday.

Police Chief Susan Ballard says the driver refused to turn off the engine. Ballard says the driver revved the engine and sped toward an officer standing outside his police car.

Ballard says the officer feared for his life.

She says the officer fired about a dozen times but it’s not known how many bullets hit the man. He died at the scene.

This is Honolulu’s first officer-involved shooting of the year. Ballard says there were eight in 2018 and six of them were fatal.
