PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The faculty union president at the Community College of Rhode Island says his recent removal as department chair is retaliation for his work as a union leader.
Steve Murray had led the opposition to a three-week January academic session, which CCRI vowed to go ahead with saying it would use part-time faculty if needed. The Providence Journal reports faculty members in the Department of Criminal Justice and Legal Studies sent a Jan. 28 letter to President Meghan Hughes asking that she reconsider her decision to remove Murray as chair.
Murray says he was notified of his removal on Jan. 22. Murray says he has taught at the college for 26 years, and has never been disciplined.
The college in statement denied retaliation and said its action regarding Murray “is pursuant to the requirements of the collective bargaining agreement with the CCRI Faculty Association.”
