House Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued a new invitation Monday to President Trump to deliver his delayed State of the Union address on Feb. 5.
The speech to a joint session of Congress had originally been slated for this Tuesday, but Mrs. Pelosi disinvited the president after he canceled her military transport to Belgium and Afghanistan amid the government shutdown.
In a terse letter released publicly, Mrs. Pelosi said she and Mr. Trump have agreed on the new date.
In a response letter Mr. Trump said it was “my great honor” to accept the new date.
“We have a great story to tell and yet, great goals to achieve!” he wrote.
When she first suggested postponing the address, Mrs. Pelosi had said she was worried about security surrounding the speech during a shutdown. After officials rebutted her concerns, she then said she just didn’t like the look of the president speaking while federal workers weren’t getting paid.
Republicans said Mrs. Pelosi feared giving the president a forum.
