Sen. Chris Coons said Monday that Roger Stone’s arrest was “significant,” but doesn’t prove collusion.

Mr. Coons, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said the indictment signaled that Mr. Mueller was closing in on the major players from the Trump campaign.

“Someone with his [Mueller’s] experience doesn’t make their most important and most central charge first, they make it last,” he said on CNN’s “New Day.”

He did stress that no one knows exactly what the special counsel knows and can prove, hence the investigation must be allowed to run its course.

Mr. Stone was arrested and charged on Friday with witness tampering, obstruction, and making false statements in relation to the release of hacked DNC emails during the 2016 election.

He is the sixth associate of President Trump to be indicted after nearly two years of investigation.

Mr. Coons said that Mr. Stone’s arrest is moving the target of the investigation closer to Mr. Trump’s innermost circle, but the question of collusion remains open.

“It doesn’t finally prove the case one way or the other of what the president knew, when he knew it, and whether or not he was personally involved in a conspiracy with the Russians,” he said.
