The Washington Redskins are preparing for quarterback Alex Smith to miss the entire 2019 season, according to a new report.
The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the Redskins will be “pleasantly surprised” if Smith returns from a broken leg, but are acting accordingly. The 34-year-old was seen last week with an external fixator at a Washington Wizards game.
At the Senior Bowl, Redskins president Bruce Allen said “we don’t have to make that decision right now” when asked if the team planned on Smith being a contributor next season.

Smith broke his fibula and tibia Nov. 18 against the Houston Texans. His recovery was derailed after the quarterback suffered a post-op infection stemming from multiple surgeries.
The Redskins met with quarterbacks at the Senior Bowl as part of their due diligence. Besides Smith, the only Redskins quarterback under contract is Colt McCoy.
