JUDSONIA, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas State Police say a 24-year-old man was hospitalized after he was shot by a police officer when he pulled a hunting knife and lunged at the officer.

State police said in a statement Saturday that Matthew Garrett of Judsonia, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) northeast of Little Rock, underwent surgery in the hours after the shooting. Authorities did not indicate what condition he’s in.

Officials say Judsonia police saw Garrett “stumble” across a highway Friday and he fled into a wooded area when officers approached him.

He later pulled the knife and officers tried to persuade him to drop it but authorities say he was shot when he lunged toward one of the officers.

The officer who shot Garrett has not been identified.

State police are leading the investigation.
