Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer said Friday the shutdown standoff showed that nobody should underestimate House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

“No one should ever underestimate the speaker, as Donald Trump has learned,” Mr. Schumer told reporters, appearing alongside Mrs. Pelosi after a deal to reopen the government for three weeks was announced.

He said Democrats, who consistently said they would not negotiate border security until the government was open, stayed “totally unified.”

“The unity of our two caucuses really worked, because I believe the president himself believed and was told by a couple of his advisers … ’Oh, just hold out and we’ll hold out and get the Democrats to crack and join us,’” Mr. Schumer said. “He was unable to do that.”

Mrs. Pelosi said Democratic values were what unified the party.

“Our unity is our power, and that is maybe what the president underestimated,” Mrs. Pelosi said.
