PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A Providence police officer has been suspended with pay after she was reportedly heard using a racial slur outside court.

Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare told the Providence Journal on Thursday that the patrolwoman was suspended on Wednesday and is the subject of an internal affairs investigation.

Pare said he could not talk about the circumstances or identify the officer, citing the Rhode Island Law Enforcement Officers Bill of Rights.

But he said he takes “racially charged comments by any officer seriously and have zero tolerance for hate and disparaging comments.”

The president of the Providence police union declined comment.
