LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Lincoln Airport has hired a Minneapolis architectural firm to design terminal improvements that would allow switching to a single security checkpoint.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports that the Airport Authority approved a $105,000 contract with Alliiance on Thursday.

Alliiance is being asked to devise preliminary designs for dealing with the security checkpoint issue as well as any upgrading needed to handle service from a third airline.

Each of the two checkpoints can process about 120 passengers an hour based on Transportation Safety Administration staffing. Airport officials say that can lead to long lines and long wait times in the early morning, when four flights leave between 6 and 7 a.m.

The officials say consolidating the checkpoints into one would process passengers 50 percent faster, meaning 360 people could be screened every hour.
