PIKE CREEK, Del. (AP) - A transportation company says it has fired the driver who left a 5-year-old boy on a school bus for hours in freezing weather.

The News Journal of Wilmington reports the Sutton Bus Company confirmed the firing Thursday and declined to comment further. The driver’s identity wasn’t immediately released.

Red Clay Consolidated School District spokeswoman Pati Nash says the driver and school didn’t follow multiple policies when the child was left on the bus Tuesday. The newspaper says Ibn fell asleep on the bus that morning and was found that afternoon.

Nash says security video shows the driver not checking the bus for students, even after students told the driver that Ibn was asleep. She says Ibn’s teacher also didn’t follow a policy that would’ve notified Ibn’s parents of his absence.
