Former Vice President Al Gore says migrant caravans trekking to the U.S. are caused by a reality in which every day is “a nature hike through the Book of Revelations.”
The climate change activist told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour that President Trump has become the “global face of climate change denial,” and as a result, he fails to understand why throngs of migrants keep heading to the U.S.
“We’re running out of time, and emissions have started going up again,” Mr. Gore said Wednesday. “Every night on the television news is like a nature hike through the Book of Revelations. Look at the fires in California a few months ago. Look at the massive floods, the hurricanes in the Carolinas, Florida, and Texas and even today the droughts in India, the massive downpours. The five hottest years ever measured have been in the last five years.”
Mr. Gore then highlighted the “dry corridor” in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras as the catalyst for their journeys.
“[It’s] the most vulnerable region in the world to global warming,” he said. “They’ve gone without a harvest this year. Some have gone without a harvest for two years. That is one of the principal causes for them making that long journey.”
Ms. Amanpour concurred.
“He’s still not taking it seriously, or at least [he’s] addressing the issue in this ’hoaxian’ fashion of his,” she lamented after sharing one of the president’s Twitter jokes on Jan. 20.
Mr. Trump asked for a bit of global warming to offset cold weather across the nation.
