PIKE CREEK, Del. (AP) - A 5-year-old Delaware boy was left on a school bus for hours in freezing weather despite multiple safeguards.

The News Journal of Wilmington reports Ibn Polk fell asleep on the bus to his Pike Creek school Tuesday morning and was found unharmed about six hours later.

Red Clay School District spokeswoman Pati Nash says security camera video shows students telling the driver that Ibn was asleep. But Nash says the driver ignored policy requiring buses be checked for students before being left at bus yards.

Video shows the driver picking the bus up that afternoon and later finding Ibn. Nash says Ibn’s teacher didn’t follow a policy that would’ve notified Ibn’s parents of his absence.

The driver’s employer, Sutton Bus Company, didn’t immediately respond to the newspaper’s calls for comment.
