HONOLULU (AP) - A Hawaii man wanted on suspicion of attempted murder surrendered to police because he thought they were closing in on him, his attorney said.
Honolulu police arrested 41-year-old Bronson Gouveia near the Helemano Military Reservation in Wahiawa on Monday after he had been on the run for nearly a month.
Police allege that Gouveia shot his girlfriend in Kahaluu on Dec. 23. The woman’s head was grazed by the bullet, and she was taken to the hospital in serious condition, police said.
Attorney Michael Green said Gouveia called him Sunday, fearing that police would shoot him on sight.
Green advised his client to turn himself in, saying to Gouveia to tell police “who you are, where you are and that you want to come in.”
Law enforcement officials had been in the area searching for a soldier who went missing earlier this month, Hawaii News Now reported .
“It was really clear that he thought he was surrounded, and he was on top of a hill or climbing somewhere,” Green said.
Gouveia then called police and gave his location.
“Officers were sent there. They set up a perimeter and upon entering the reservation, they located him on a roadway leading into the reservation,” Honolulu Police Sgt. Chris Kim said.
