MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont’s House members would start voting on bills electronically if lawmakers approve a proposal from Chittenden Rep. Jim Harrison.
The Republican lawmaker told Vermont Public Radio that Vermont has one of the few House chambers that doesn’t use an electronic voting system to tall roll call votes. Instead, the clerk reads each name and records the response from all 150 lawmakers, which can take more than 15 minutes.
Harrison says he understands that’s the tradition, but he believes the Legislature has a responsibility to change with the times and make more efficient use of its time.
