HOUSTON (AP) - Thousands of people lined the streets in Houston as two competing parades were held on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Nine-year-old Addison Water attended a parade Monday with her family. She told the Houston Chronicle she hopes people continue spreading King’s message. She says, “He brought white people and black people and all people of the world together.”
Derrick Askew, who attended a parade with his grandchildren, says, “It’s important to let our family know that there’s a better sense of community than the community we are seeing on the news.”
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner had hoped to have only one parade this year, so the city officially supported the Original MLK Jr. Day Parade - the nation’s oldest such event honoring King. But the MLK Grande Parade carried on as well.
