President Trump on Monday observed Martin Luther King Jr. Day by visiting the memorial in Washington to the civil rights legend.
Mr. Trump and Vice President Mike Pence placed a wreath at the memorial to honor King.
The event was not listed on the president’s daily schedule, but press were called to accompany his motorcade to the memorial.
Mr. Trump thanked those in attendance but did not make other remarks.
The president spent the long weekend at the White House amid a partial government shutdown that has lasted more than a month.
Last year, Mr. Trump spent the King holiday at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.
He was criticized for golfing that day rather than participating in a public service event as had some previous presidents. He also weathered accusations of being a racist because of reportedly saying the U.S. doesn’t need more immigrants from “s—hole” countries in Africa.
