MERIDIAN, Miss. (AP) - A few employees in a Mississippi city have been approved for higher pay because they are taking on extra responsibilities.

The Meridian Star reports that the Meridian City Council signed off on the salaries after hearing how the workers were doing duties beyond their original job description.

The nine positions include two building inspectors, an executive secretary and an equal opportunity officer. Also included are a court collection specialist, a custodial supervisor, a maintenance worker, a fire equipment technician and an equipment operator.

The Meridian City Council had set pay scales for most municipal workers last year. The nine workers were already above the maximum on that scale.
