ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) - Matt Morgan scored 21 points in becoming Cornell’s all-time leading scorer and the Big Red opened the Ivy League season with a 60-59 victory over Columbia on Saturday.
Morgan made four 3-pointers and the senior guard finished with 2,044 career points, passing Ryan Wittman (2006-10, 2,028 points) and also Brown’s Earl Hunt (1999-03, 2,041) for No. 3 on the Ivy career list.
Cornell led by 18 with 13 minutes to go, but the Lions took the lead at 58-57 with 2½ minutes left after a 13-0 run sparked by six points from Gabe Stefanini.
Jimmy Boeheim hit a 3-pointer with just over two minutes left for Cornell’s final points and the lead. Morgan and Boeheim both missed the front ends of bonus situations before Stefanini was fouled crossing halfcourt with 3.5 seconds left. He made the first free throw but missed the second that would have tied the game and a putback was also off target.
Josh Warren added 14 points and 10 rebounds for Cornell (9-8), which made 13 of 27 3-point attempts. Steven Julian also had 10 rebounds plus four blocks.
Stefanini scored 18 points and Quinton Adlesh 10 for the Lions (5-10).
