JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A Democratic member of the Jackson City Council is running for the three-member state board that regulates utilities.
The Clarion Ledger reports that De’Keither Stamps has filed to run for central district public service commissioner.
Democrat Cecil Brown of Jackson, who holds the seat now, is not seeking re-election.
Stamps is an Iraq war veteran. He says he wants to make utility rates more affordable; ensure reliable service, for better access to high-speed internet in rural areas; and invest in utility infrastructure.
Republican Brent Bailey of Madison County has also filed to run in the central district.
March 1 is candidates’ qualifying deadline for statewide, regional, legislative and county offices in Mississippi. Party primaries are in August, and the general election is in November.
