President Trump said Saturday that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is “controlled by the radical left” as he prepared to announce a proposal to end the government shutdown and fund a border wall.

“She’s being controlled by the radical left, which is a problem,” Mr. Trump told reporters at the White House. “I think that’s a very bad thing for her. I think it’s a very bad thing for the Democrats.”

He said of their feud, “Whether it’s personal or not [for her], it’s not personal for me.”

The president is making an announcement at 4 p.m. on a proposed solution to end the shutdown. Axios reported that it will include Mr. Trump’s demand of $5.7 billion for border barriers, and an extension of temporary protections for so-called “Dreamers” and others with temporary protected immigration status.

The president is not expected to declare a national emergency.

Mr. Trump repeated his belief Saturday that “walls work.”

“We need walls,” he said. “You look at different places, they put up a wall, no problems.”
