DENVER (AP) - Denver teachers are voting on whether to strike after negotiators failed to reach an agreement before their contract expired.
KDVR-TV reports talks ended Friday about 90 minutes before the midnight deadline. Members of the Denver Classroom Teachers Association will vote Saturday and Tuesday on whether to walk out.
The earliest a strike could start would be Jan. 28. It would be the first teacher walkout in Denver since 1994.
Teachers are asking for raises and incentives for training. Their union says the district is losing good teachers to higher-paying districts.
Denver Public Schools offered to increase base salaries by 10 percent and an additional $26.5 million in total compensation. That was about $8 million less than teachers wanted.
Both sides said they were disappointed that they hadn’t reached an agreement.
