Senate Judiciary Chairman Sen. Lindsey Graham signaled Friday he plans to look into a new report that Justice Department official Bruce Ohr warned federal investigators information from the salacious “Steele dossier” was from a biased source.
The South Carolina Republican, in a series of tweets, called the revelation “stunning.”
Mr. Ohr, in closed-door testimony reported by Fox News Thursday, told lawmakers he warned the FBI about the potential taint of Christopher Steele’s dossier, since the author disliked Mr. Trump. Mr. Steele’s information would be used as part of the FBI’s justification for obtaining a secret wiretap order on a Trump campaign figure.
“I wanted them to be aware of any possible bias, or you know, as they evaluate the information, they need to know the circumstances,” Mr. Ohr said during the closed-door testimony, according to Fox.
Republicans have long criticized the veracity of the dossier, and even Trump political opponents have said dossier claims were either unfounded or not proved.
“Revelations that Bruce Ohr told senior DOJ and FBI officials that dossier author Christopher Steele: 1) was biased against and hated Trump 2) was on the payroll as a Democratic operative before FISA warrant application was requested are stunning,” Mr. Graham said.
“These purported revelations will NOT get a pass in Senate Judiciary Committee,” he added.
