MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont Congressman Peter Welch has been appointed to the House committee that is investigating Russia’s attempt to influence the outcome of the 2016 presidential election.

The House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence oversees the country’s intelligence agencies, including the Department of Defense and the CIA and the FBI.

U.S. Rep. Welch, a Democrat, said Wednesday that he’s “grateful for the opportunity to serve at such a momentous time in our nation’s history.” He says “we have a solemn responsibility to protect our national security, as well as our privacy and civil liberties.”

Welch is also returning the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.
