LAS VEGAS (AP) - A man died after a shooting involving an armed contract transit security guard at a bus stop in the Las Vegas casino district, police said Thursday.
No one else was injured and Las Vegas police Officer Aden OcampoGomez said there was no ongoing threat following the 2 p.m. shooting on busy Casino Center Drive outside Binion’s Gambling Hall casino.
The man who was shot was pronounced dead at University Medical Center in Las Vegas, the police spokesman said. He was not immediately identified.
OcampoGomez said the gunfire followed an altercation and it was not immediately clear if an arrest was made.
Spokeswoman Barbara Moreno at security contractor Allied Universal called the death tragic but said it was too early in the investigation to provide details. She said the company was cooperating fully with Las Vegas police.
A Regional Transit Commission of Southern Nevada official did not immediately respond to messages.
The Fremont Street Experience is a four-block sidewalk pedestrian mall lined with casinos and topped with an LED-lighted canopy.
The fatal shooting came a day after a former security guard appeared in a Las Vegas courtroom on a murder charge in the death of an 82-year-old passenger who police said was shoved face-first out a bus door in November in North Las Vegas.
Charles Adams died Dec. 21 of injuries including facial fractures that a doctor blamed on his face-forward fall at a bus stop in North Las Vegas, according to a police report.
The former guard, Anthony Louis Villanueva, 41, of Las Vegas, remained jailed pending a Jan. 24 hearing.
Villanueva was dismissed from his job at Allied Universal in November, a company spokeswoman said.
Police said he had a handgun, baton and chemical agents but did not use them when he confronted Adams.
