William Barr dodges questions about his earlier statements on Roe v. Wade

William Barr, President Trump’s attorney general nominee, dodged questions Tuesday before the Senate Judiciary Committee about statements he made on overturning Roe v. Wade nearly 30 years ago.

In 1991, Mr. Barr said Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided. About a year later, he predicted the decision legalizing abortion in the United States would “fall” because it is unconstitutional.

When asked about his earlier comments, Mr. Barr said previous presidents have stopped asking for the decision to be reversed.

“I said in 1991 that I thought as an original matter, it had been wrongly decided. And that was, what, within 18 years of its decision? Now it’s been 46 years. And the department has stopped — under Republican administrations stopped as a routine matter asking that it be overruled, and I don’t see that … being resumed.”
