BOSTON (AP) - One of the state’s newest members of Congress has been appointed to a powerful committee.
Democratic Rep. Lori Trahan - who represents the state’s 3rd Congressional District including Lowell, Lawrence and Haverhill - was appointed Tuesday to a seat on the House Armed Services Committee.
The committee has jurisdiction over the defense policy of the United States, including cybersecurity, defense research, ongoing military operations and acquisition and industrial base policy.
Trahan is taking the seat formerly held by Rep. Niki Tsongas, who opted not to seek re-election. Tsongas also served on the Armed Services Committee.
Trahan also gave her first speech on the floor of the House of Representatives on Tuesday.
Trahan, who opposes President Donald Trump’s proposed border wall, called for an end to the partial federal government shutdown.
